Groundwork For Independence

Westhab’s Transitional Housing (i.e. shelter) programs assist homeless individuals and families in regaining stability and securing permanent housing. Our comprehensive service model helps with housing, employment, connection to community-based resources, and everything else needed to achieve permanent self-sufficiency and independence.

Transitional Housing programs are a crucial part of our community’s safety net, especially as we work to expand the supply of quality affordable housing.

PAVING THE ROAD TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY

Pathways to Permanent Housing

Providing Shelter

Westhab operates Rapid Re-Housing programs across NYC, providing over 2,500 units for homeless individuals and families. Westhab is also the largest provider of housing and services to the homeless in Westchester County, providing over 200 units of transitional housing. These shelters are safe, dignified spaces where residents can receive the support they need to achieve permanent housing and independence.

Finding Housing

At every Westhab shelter site, housing specialists navigate residents through the homeless services system and into permanent housing. Residents are provided comprehensive support with every aspect of their housing cases, from rental assistance applications to searching the housing market for a new home.

Employment Services

Not having a living wage is a major barrier to permanent housing for many people experiencing homelessness. To ensure the long-term success of our residents, every site has access to employment services that connect residents with jobs and resources to support their financial independence.

Case Management

Each individual and family is assigned a primary case manager upon entry into the shelter. They serve as the point of contact and along with the housing specialist expedite the search for housing while connecting residents to additional services such as social services, mental health resources, and other community-based resources.

Youth Services

Youth Services staff provide academic support and recreation to homeless families during their stay. Providing youth in shelter with essential resources and a sense of normalcy sets them up for success when the time comes to transition out of shelter.
