What We Do
Westhab helps families out of homelessness and into permanent housing. People often come to Westhab’s shelters at their lowest point. Our incredible staff shows humanity in this moment of great need. We offer a place for families to live with dignity and respect and help create a plan to get them back on their feet. Family shelters serve as the first step on the road to long-term independence by connecting residents to housing, employment, and other valuable resources.
Who We Serve
We serve families from Westchester County and NYC who have entered the homeless system. There are many negative stereotypes surrounding homelessness, but in reality, homeless families come from all walks of life. Homelessness can stem from many issues, including evictions, house fires, medical emergencies, or chronic health issues.
Why Family Shelters?
- SUPPORTIVE SERVICES
Family shelters offer a wide range of supportive services, including case management, job training and placement, and educational resources. These services aim to address the root causes of homelessness and empower families to regain stability and independence.
- YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We prioritize the well-being of children by providing a stable environment where they can continue their education, access health services, and enjoy recreational activities. This helps mitigate the negative impact of homelessness on children’s development and future opportunities.
- COMMUNITY INTEGRATION
Family shelters partner with local organizations, government agencies, and volunteers to connect families with resources in the community. This integration fosters a sense of belonging and support, helping families transition out of homelessness more effectively.
- PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION
By offering emergency housing and supportive services, family shelters play a crucial role in preventing homelessness from becoming a chronic or recurring issue for families. We also offer services and support in situations of domestic violence and other crises, providing a lifeline for families in need.
