County Legislator Virginia Perez Sponsors Backpack Giveaway for Families at Dayspring Community Center
Earlier this month, dozens of volunteers from Macy’s Cross County and Faith Assembly in Yonkers joined Westhab staff at Dayspring Community Center to pack 600 backpacks full of school supplies for the coming school year. Last week, County Legislator Virginia Perez joined us at Dayspring Community Center to give the backpacks to children.
“Our families live in some of the lowest income communities in the area. They want their children to succeed in school, but they often don’t have the resources to buy everything they need. With support from Virginia Perez and the Westchester County Board of Legislators, we can help them,” said Giselle Ayala, Westhab’s Director of Youth Services.
According to Deloitte’s 2018 back-to-school survey, the average American family will spend $112 on school supplies this year. For several years, County Legislator Perez has worked with Westhab to secure funding from the Westchester County Board of Legislators to provide backpacks and school supplies for families in need. These supplies allow students to return to school with the tools they need to succeed—without leaving parents to wonder how they can afford it.
The photos below are from the packing day and the giveaway day. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!
