Family Services

Westhab provides a range of services to address the needs of families living at our Coachman Family Center homeless shelter, and in scattered site apartment housing, as well as those who visit our community resource centers in Yonkers and Mount Vernon. We employ a Normative Communities approach in our family programming: Peer support from the very beginning helps new families understand and adopt positive social norms which optimizes the benefits they gain from our continuum of services. Individualized service plans are designed to help families break the cycle of poverty. They may include: advocacy and benefits assistance; crisis counseling and referrals; life skills training; education and career counseling; youth services; support for victims of domestic violence; assistance in finding affordable, permanent housing; and retention counseling to promote stability once families move out of shelter housing.

Please note: most of the services listed are funded through DSS and require referrals.

The White Plains School District applied for a grant on behalf of the Coachman Family Center to provide more educational tools to the homeless youth in the district. Thanks to this grant, the district was able to purchase a Smart Board and ten Chromebooks. The equipment will be used by the school district teachers who have been working with the kids on a regular basis.

Westhab-operated 100-family capacity homeless shelter, were treated to a very special holiday surprise. A special night was planned by Greater Centennial Girl Scout Troops from Mount Vernon who hosted a 'Holiday Slumber Party'. The party was complete with a bouncy castle, cotton candy machine, ornament and cookie decorating crafts, dancing and other fun activities as well as an unlimited supply of goodies. One of the special surprises planned for the finale of the party was an appearance from Westchester's own Phylicia Rashad who read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.' Thank you to Ms. Rashad for giving our girls this unforgettable experience!

Special thanks to the following companies and groups for their donations of goods that helped to make this night so special: Fiesta Bounce, White Plains Bake Shoppe, Fleetwood Bakery, Westchester Pajama Program & Euro Pizzeria.

Westhab would like to acknowledge the Mount Vernon Greater Centennial Girl Scouts for coordinating the event and providing the girls at the Coachman Family Center with an unforgettable evening filled with amazing activities and happy surprises.
